Direct-Reduced Iron (DRI), commonly known as sponge iron, is produced by reducing iron ore in solid form using a reducing gas. The iron ore, in the form of lumps, pellets, or fines, is treated with a gas generated from natural gas or coal. This reducing gas mainly consists of hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO), which act as the primary reducing agents. The process of converting iron ore into metallic iron without melting it is known as direct reduction.
